Kapalua Villa Rentals in West Maui

Ocean-View Condos at the Quiet North End of the Coast

Kapalua villa rentals are for people who came to Maui to slow down. This is the northern tip of West Maui, a resort area wrapped in nature preserve, with championship golf on the Plantation and Bay courses and some of the least crowded beaches on the island.

You give up nightlife. You get space. If that sounds like a fair trade, keep reading, because the three villa resorts here each solve a slightly different problem.

Quick Takeaways

  • Three villa resorts: We rent at the Kapalua Bay Villas, Kapalua Ridge Villas and Kapalua Golf Villas, all inside Kapalua Resort.
  • Getting around: A free shuttle runs door to door within Kapalua Resort, so the car can sit.
  • Golf: The Plantation Course and the Bay Course are both inside the resort.
  • Winter rule: Skip Honolua Bay when the big surf arrives and snorkel sheltered Kapalua Bay instead.

Kapalua Is the Quiet, Green End of West Maui

Kapalua is built for privacy rather than a scene. Kapalua Resort spreads across 22,000 acres, from the slopes of Puʻu Kukui down to white-sand bays. The name loosely translates to "arms embracing the sea." It fits.

Dining runs from the Honolua Store, one of the oldest eateries on Maui, to Merriman's, Sansei and Cane & Canoe. Spa Montage and The Ritz-Carlton Spa are both inside the resort, and the Kapalua Coastal Trail passes right along the front of the Bay Villas on its easy route between D.T. Fleming Beach and Merriman's.

Serious hikers have more. The Village Trails loop through a forested old golf course up to the Duck Pond, while the Mahana Ridge Trail is a hard day out, roughly 20 miles there and back, ending at the Maunalei Arboretum. Carry real water.

Kapalua Bay Villas Sit Between Two Beaches

The Bay Villas were the first luxury condominiums built in Kapalua, and their location still wins: 141 units on 16-plus acres between Kapalua Bay and Oneloa Bay, with three white-sand beaches within walking distance.

Units have high ceilings, A/C and an in-unit washer and dryer. Three heated pools. Two tennis courts. Gated entry. Bay Villa 37G4 is a two-bedroom for six, and Bay Villa 11G2 is a one-bedroom for two, which is about as good as a honeymoon base gets on this coast.

Kapalua Ridge Villas Climb the Hillside for the View

Choose the Ridge Villas if the view toward Molokai matters more than walking to the sand. Built in 1980 and terraced into the hillside, the resort has 161 condos across 28 buildings, most with spacious balconies.

Every unit has a full kitchen plus its own washer, dryer and dishwasher. Most have A/C, not all. Covered parking is reserved and free, and there are two heated pools with gas barbecues. Our Ridge Villa 414 is an ocean-view two-bedroom for six; Ridge Villa 1422 is a one-bedroom, two-bath for four, and it has no A/C.

Kapalua Golf Villas Run Along the Bay Course

Golfers should book the Golf Villas and stop reading. The resort's 186 condos sit on more than 15 acres alongside the Kapalua Bay Golf Course, and most have panoramic ocean views, sunsets included.

Layouts are one and two bedrooms in three-story buildings with central A/C, covered carports and four heated pools. The par-73 Plantation Course is in the same resort. Golf Villa 19T4 is our one-bedroom, two-bath with ocean views from a large balcony. It sleeps four.

Kapalua's Bays Change With the Season

Treat Honolua Bay as a calm-season spot, and keep sheltered Kapalua Bay as your winter backup. Honolua and neighboring Mokulēʻia (Slaughterhouse) form a 45-acre Marine Life Conservation District established in 1978, and Hawaii DLNR advises avoiding its waters in winter months, when high surf is common. No facilities, either.

Kapalua Bay, sheltered between two rocky points, is where we send winter snorkelers instead. Oneloa (Ironwoods) belongs to surfers and bodyboarders who don't mind a long, breezy beach to themselves. Napili Bay, just south, is reef-protected and gentle for small kids.

Kapalua Suits One Family Better Than a Big Group

Kapalua is a one-family destination for us, not a reunion venue. For a group, we can place one Bay Villa and two Ridge Villas. That's it.

A three-generation family in a two-bedroom villa, grandparents on the shuttle to dinner and kids in the heated pool, is exactly what Kapalua does well. Planning a wedding or a reunion that needs a dozen condos side by side? That's Kahana, where Kahana Sunset can hold up to 24 condos for one group and Sands of Kahana 19.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between the Kapalua Bay, Ridge and Golf Villas?

A: The Bay Villas sit closest to the beaches, between Kapalua Bay and Oneloa Bay. The Ridge Villas climb a terraced hillside for Molokai views. The Golf Villas run along the Kapalua Bay Golf Course.

Q: Do Kapalua villa rentals have air conditioning?

A: Bay Villas units have A/C and Golf Villas condos have central A/C. Most Ridge Villas units have it too, though our Ridge Villa 1422 does not.

Q: Is there a shuttle in Kapalua Resort?

A: Yes. A free door-to-door shuttle runs within the Kapalua Resort area, which makes reaching the beaches, restaurants and golf easy without a car.

Q: Can you snorkel Honolua Bay in winter?

A: Hawaii DLNR advises avoiding the Honolua-Mokulēʻia waters in winter months, when high surf is common. Kapalua Bay, sheltered between two rocky points, is the alternative we suggest.
