Kahana Is the Quiet Stretch Between Kaanapali and Kapalua

A sunny day on Kahana Beach, Maui. Palm trees sway along the shoreline.

Ask a first-time visitor where they're staying on West Maui and you'll hear Kaanapali or Kapalua, because those are the names on the brochures. Kahana sits directly between the two. It rarely comes up — which is exactly why the people who do find it keep coming back to the same building year after year.

It's a residential community first and a resort strip second. Locals live here. The oceanfront looks straight across the channel at Molokai, the buildings are lower and older than the Kaanapali towers, and the whole stretch runs a couple of clicks quieter. We manage five resorts along it, and our own office sits in the middle.

Quick Summary: Key Takeaways

  • Where it is: Kahana lies between Kaanapali and Kapalua on West Maui's leeward coast, facing Molokai across the channel.
  • Five resorts: Sands of Kahana, Kahana Sunset, Kuleana, Royal Kahana and Valley Isle Resort are the properties we manage here.
  • Local office: Our licensed brokerage operates from Kahana itself, so the people managing your condo are down the road.
  • Both ways in ten minutes: Kapalua's beaches and golf sit one direction; Kaanapali's restaurants and nightlife the other.
  • From November: Humpbacks are generally in Hawaiian waters from November through April, and this channel is where they show up.

Where Kahana Actually Sits on the West Maui Coast

Honoapiilani Highway runs the length of West Maui, and Kahana occupies the middle of it — north of Kaanapali, south of Napili and Kapalua. The shoreline here is oceanfront rather than a long open beach, and that's the honest trade: water directly below the lanai, and a shorter walk to a swimmable cove than a three-mile strand gives you.

The view is the other half of it. Molokai across the channel. Lanai off to the southwest. Sunsets drop between the two islands most evenings from October onward, and the lanais here face them square-on without anything built in the way.

Five Resorts Along One Stretch of Coast

Five of them. Sands of Kahana, Kahana Sunset, Kuleana, Royal Kahana and Valley Isle Resort — and they are not interchangeable. Royal Kahana is the tall one with wraparound lanais. Kahana Sunset steps down a hillside toward a small sandy cove, which makes it the usual pick for families with young children. Sands of Kahana is the largest complex on the stretch.

Every unit we manage has a full kitchen, and sizes run from studios to three bedrooms. That kitchen matters more here than it does in a resort district, because the restaurant density is lower and the grocery run is short. Cook two nights out of seven and the trip gets noticeably cheaper.

Our Office Is in Kahana, Which Matters More Than It Sounds

Sullivan Properties has run a licensed brokerage out of Kahana for years, and we've managed West Maui property since 1979 — three generations of one family, more than 75 condos and homes along this coast. When the air conditioning quits on a Sunday, the maintenance team is not flying in from anywhere. They're already here.

On-call staff around the clock. An on-island representative you can actually reach. Check-out cleaning and check-in refreshing between every stay. Unglamorous work, all of it — and the whole difference between a good week and a frustrating one.

Kapalua One Direction, Kaanapali the Other

Head north into Kapalua and you get D.T. Fleming Beach with its lifeguards, barbecue tables and steady surf, Ironwoods reached on foot along the Kapalua Coastal Trail from a car park that holds maybe a dozen cars, Honolua Bay at the end of a rainforest path, and two of the better golf courses in the state. Head south and Kaanapali hands you restaurants, shops and a long white-sand beach that lands on world's-best lists most years.

Kahana's advantage is that you don't have to choose. Ten minutes either way. And you sleep in neither.

Who Kahana Suits, and Who Should Book Elsewhere

Book Kahana for a quiet base with a kitchen, a lanai over the water and easy access in both directions. Book Kaanapali instead if walking to dinner and a beach bar every night is the point of the holiday. Book Kapalua if golf or seclusion is. We'd rather say that now than have you work it out on day two of seven.

One more thing worth knowing about the timing. NOAA's Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary notes that humpbacks are generally seen in Hawaii from November through April, peaking January through March, and the channel Kahana faces is prime water for them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Where is Kahana on Maui?

A: On the leeward west coast, along Honoapiilani Highway between Kaanapali to the south and Napili and Kapalua to the north. It is a residential community with oceanfront condo resorts rather than a purpose-built resort district.

Q: Is Kahana a good place to stay on Maui?

A: Yes, if you want quiet, a full kitchen and a lanai over the water, with both Kaanapali and Kapalua roughly ten minutes away. It suits families and repeat visitors better than travelers who want to walk to nightlife.

Q: Which resorts are in Kahana, Maui?

A: The ones we manage are Sands of Kahana, Kahana Sunset, Kuleana, Royal Kahana and Valley Isle Resort. They differ a great deal in size, layout, on-site amenities and how easily you reach swimmable water, so it is genuinely worth describing your group to us rather than choosing off a gallery of photographs.

Q: Can you see whales from Kahana?

A: The channel between West Maui and Molokai is well-known whale water, and humpbacks are generally in Hawaiian waters from November through April with a January-to-March peak. Oceanfront lanais here look straight at it.
