Maui Weather in January to March: What West Maui Is Really Like in Winter

Rainbow over West Maui, HI.
by Sullivan Properties

Somebody in every winter booking group has read that January to March is Maui's "rainy season." It is, sort of. Maui weather in January is still warm enough for the beach most days, but it's wetter than summer, and the surf behaves very differently. We manage condos in Kahana, Napili, Kapalua and Kaanapali. Since January to March falls inside Maui's December-to-April peak season, it pays to know what you're booking before you pick dates, and the time to pick them is now.

Quick Summary: Key Takeaways

  • Warm, not hot: highs average about 79°F in all three months.
  • Wetter than summer: each winter month averages 2.4 to 3.9 inches of rain on the West Maui coast, against about an inch in June.
  • February averages the least rain: a rain-shy group should pick it.
  • Winter is surf season: Hawaii's ocean-safety program runs it from November through April, so plan swims day by day.
  • Whales make up for it: humpback season peaks January through March.

Maui Weather in January Means Warm Days and a Few Wet Ones

January in West Maui is warm, a little showery and rarely a washout. NOAA's 1991–2020 climate normals for the Kapalua–West Maui Airport station put January's average high at 79.0°F, its average low at 65.7°F and its average rainfall at 3.51 inches. That station sits on our stretch of coast.

Compare that with August, when the same station averages an 86.2°F high, and winter comes out about seven degrees cooler by day. Bring a light layer.

Rain falls on fewer days than "rainy season" suggests, since the same normals count about 5.6 January days with a tenth of an inch or more. A winter storm can still bring a properly wet day, so keep one indoor plan in your back pocket.

February Averages the Least Rain of the Three Winter Months

Want dry beach days? Pick February. The same NOAA normals give February 2.43 inches of rain spread over about 5.3 of those wetter days, against 3.92 inches over about 7.3 in March. Highs barely move, at 79.0°F and 79.4°F.

But keep it in proportion. June at the same station averages 1.07 inches, so each winter month brings roughly two to nearly four times June's rain. March still works for whale chasers who don't mind a few more showers.

Location matters too. Kaanapali gives you a long, walkable beach and Whalers Village for a rainy-day wander, while Kapalua and Napili trade that convenience for quiet bays and coastal trails that look their best right after a shower clears.

Winter Swell Changes Which West Maui Beaches Are Swimmable

Hawaii's state ocean-safety program treats November through April as winter surf season, when many beaches on north- and west-facing shores can see extremely high surf. A beach that sat calm and clear in July can be rough with shorebreak in February. Then it settles.

So we tell winter guests to plan swims by the day rather than the week. The state's advice is that wave conditions are local, and calmer water can often be found at a beach in a different part of the island. On a big-swell morning, that means a drive to another stretch of coast, or a walk on the Kapalua coastal trail instead of a swim.

Respect the shorebreak. If it looks rough from the sand, stay out and come back tomorrow.

Whale Season Peaks in the Same January-to-March Window

The showers come with whales. Humpback season off West Maui peaks from January through March, when the whales gather in the sheltered Auau Channel between Maui, Lanai and Molokai. On a calm morning you can count blows from an oceanfront lanai before the coffee is finished.

That's why a channel-facing unit is worth asking for in winter, since it turns a rainy half-hour into a front-row seat with the binoculars waiting on the lanai table.

Choose a Condo That Works on a Showery Afternoon

A winter stay works best in a condo you'd actually enjoy on the one afternoon it rains. Our West Maui rentals run up to three bedrooms with fully equipped kitchens, which means a wet hour becomes a long lunch at home instead of a hunt for a restaurant table. A covered lanai facing the ocean is worth more in February than in July, because it lets you sit out a shower with a book and still keep an eye on the channel.

Book the unit first. Peak season runs from December to April.
